Mario Kart 8 Deluxe appears to support 12-player LAN mode, after one player discovered a hidden option.
Nintendo and Mario Kart content creator Mankalor took to Twitter to post a clip of. how they stumbled across a secret LAN mode for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. According to the creator, holding down the L & R buttons and clicking in the Left Stick on the main menu unlocks the LAN Play option.
Selecting the option brings up the Create Party function, allowing players to link up to 12 Nintendo Switch consoles for 12-player in-person Mario Kart play.
Nintendo hasn't been entirely secretive about Mario Kart 8's LAN functionality, with a dedicated support page showing players how to do it. The issue has mainly been that there's no in-game indication of how to find the option.
According to Nintendo, players will need the following in order to set up local LAN play with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:
- Mario Mart 8 Deluxe (physical or download)
- Nintendo Switch dock
- LAN Adapter (only required when using a dock without LAN port)
- Ethernet cable
- Television
Players will also need a wired router to connect the systems together via a wired connection.
Despite the directions being listed on Nintendo's website, Mankalor has certainly brought more attention to the mode — for the better.
