Overwatch 2 players have taken issue with Widowmaker's new Medusa skin, calling it "pay-to-lose."
The Battle for Olympus event in Overwatch 2 is set to end on Jan. 19, and so far players have been taking in everything the event has to offer. Heroes enter into a free-for-all deathmatch, with the hero with the highest number of kills at the end being declared the champion and getting a statue of themselves placed in Illios Ruins.
As part of the event, a number of new skins were made available for players to purchase and earn, including the Medusa skin which transforms DPS hero Widowmaker into the mythical Gorgon. As reported by CharlieIntel, players have pointed out that the skin comes with a major flaw.
Medusa Widowmaker Skin Dubbed "Pay-to-Lose" by Overwatch 2 Players
Streamer Brian "Kephrii" St. Pierre took to Twitter to post his experience with the Widowmaker Medusa skin.
“The new Medusa skin is so loud it actively punishes you for using it,” he explained.
“Not only can you not hear enemy footsteps you also can’t hide either. The enemy team can hear the snakes/hair on the Medusa skin & pinpoint your location from them.”
The streamer posted a clip of the skin in action, in which an enemy player is able to track him using the sound of the skin's snakes. From Kephrii's own perspective using the skin, the snakes can be heard loudly, making it difficult to hear the actions of enemies nearby.
The skin, which can only be unlocked through purchasing it via the in-game store, led other players to joke: “Pay to lose, the only way it should be.”
Not everyone agreed with the streamer, however. Some made the point that Overwatch 2 games are rarely as quiet as the posted clip, and that the snakes wouldn't be heard amongst the usual noisy chaos. "It’s never this quiet in an actual game and I doubt it’ll be that impactful amongst the already loud weapons being shot, abilities, voice lines, map sounds, payload noises etc.," one user said.
At the time of writing, Blizzard have yet to announce if they will be making any changes to the skin.
