Magic: The Gathering Arena is one of the most popular ways to play MTG virtually. It's got a lot going for it: It's official, streamlined and perhaps best of all, totally free-to-play. Here's how to get started with MTG Arena.
MTG Arena is the flashier younger brother of the virtual MTG ecosystem. It released for PC in 2019 and mobile devices in 2021. It's fully free to play, though microtransactions do exist to purchase the game's premium currency, Gems, and pre-order bundles for new sets.
How to Download MTG Arena: PC, Mobile Devices
MTG Arena is available on a number of different platforms, including PC and mobile devices. For those on PC, it can be easily downloaded in a number of ways: Currently, it's available on the Epic Games Store and can also be downloaded from the official Magic website.
MTG Arena is available on both Android and Apple devices, though one should make sure one's device is compatible with the game before trying to download it - it's pretty demanding on mobile hardware, but that comes with the territory of on-the-go-play.
Wizards of the Coast also recently announced that MTG Arena would be arriving on Steam later this month, where players will be able to make use of Steam's architecture to play the game - this could also mean compatibility on Steam Deck, allowing for further portable play without requiring a mobile device. This feature is not yet confirmed, however.
Regardless of what one selects for their primary MTG platform, users will have to create a Wizards account to save collection progress. Creating an account will also allow a user to redeem codes for free rewards in MTG Arena, although this system is being phased out.
