New reports have suggested that Call of Duty 2024 is in development and could still launch on past generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
As reported by Insider Gaming, an Activision data breach from December 2022 suggested that a new Call of Duty will be coming in 2024, codename "Cerberus." It was previously believed that Activision would be moving away from its yearly Call of Duty release cycle, but signs are pointing to the contrary.
In addition, the upcoming game is reportedly still being developed with the last generation consoles in mind. According to the report, the documents contained "references" to Cerberus being on past-generation consoles.
Call of Duty 2024 Could Launch on Past Gen Consoles
The documents also detailed information on upcoming content for Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2, such as a new small map. But, some of the information found in the leaked documents has since changed. The document claimed that the MW2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 update would arrive on March 15. In reality, the new season will likely start on April 12 according to the current Battle Pass.
Insider Gaming's report highlighted that Call of Duty is now built off of the same engine, regardless of which of Activision's studios is developing it. The change was made in order to allow the development cycle to be more seemless. Should the engine remain the same for 2024, then the possibility of a past-gen release seems more plausible.
It remains to be seen how accurate these leaks truly are, given the differing timeframes. Until Activision announces the projects, information is always subject to change.
