The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild.

Announced as part of today's, Sept. 13, Nintendo Direct, the highly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been given its official title and release date. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.

The announcement was accompanied by a new glimpse at the upcoming game, showing off gameplay of Link as he runs, climbs and soars through the landscape of Hyrule. The game is also set to feature floating islands high above Hyrule, giving players a new vertical space to navigate. The game will make use of an open world like BotW.

The sequel was originally set to be released this year, but was later delayed to 2023. Series producer Eiji Aounuma said of the delay that "in order to make this game's experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game, so please wait a while longer."

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will release on May 12, 2023.
